An unpublished donative dirham
Lot 1816
ISLAMIC, 'Abbasid Caliphate. temp. Al-Muqtadir (?), second reign, AH 296-317 / AD 908-929. Dirham (Silver, 26 mm, 1.51 g), a donative issue, uncertain mint. Symbol or letter within within eight-pointed star; all within circle. Rev. Symbol or letter within eight-pointed star; all within circle. Cf. Ilisch B II 2 and Zeno-97848 (for donative dirham with an eight-pointed star on obverse and reverse). Apparently unique and of great interest. Holed and weakly struck, otherwise, fine.

From the Tabib Collection, formed over the past 40 years.

The frequent piercing of the very rare Abbasid donative dirhams strongly indicates that they were usually worn as pendants by their recipients.
