An unusual Seleukid weight of two tetradrachms
Lot 1992
SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Antiochos I Soter, 281-261 BC. Weight of 8 Drachms or 2 Tetradrachms (Lead, 27 mm, 33.10 g), Seleukeia on the Tigris. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ - ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ Apollo seated left on omphalos, holding arrow in his right hand and resting his left on grounded bow; to left and right, monograms. Rev. Central pellet within double concentric circles; around, thick, radiating lines. CPAI -. Pondera -. A highly unusual and interesting piece. Some deposits, otherwise, very fine.

This design of this interesting lead item corresponds to SC 379.3c, a tetradrachm of Antiochos I Soter from Seleukeia on the Tigris. Such pieces are often described as trial strikes, in this case, however, the engraved reverse and the weight of 33.10 g argues for the use as a coin weight of 8 drachms or 2 tetradrachms of Attic weight
