An exceptional hyperpyron of Michael VIII Palaeologus

Michael VIII Palaeologus, 1261-1282. Hyperpyron (Gold, 25 mm, 4.22 g, 7 h), Constantinopolis. Bust of Virgin Mary, orans, within city walls furnished with six groups of towers and flanked by I and Φ. Rev. Emperor kneeling slightly to right, being presented by Archangel Michael to Christ enthroned slightly to left and holding scroll in his left hand; to left IC; to right, XC above O[Π] / Λ. DOC 6. SB 2242. Sharply struck and in exceptional condition for the issue, with a superb obverse. Light die breaks on the reverse, otherwise, virtually as struck.
