An extremely rare tetrachalkon of the usurper Timarchos

SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Timarchos, usurper, 164-161 BC. Tetrachalkon (Bronze, 28 mm, 17.01 g, 3 h), Ekbatana. Diademed head of Timarchos to right; behind, Δ above X (mark of value). Rev. ΒAΣΙΛΕΩΣ / MEΓAΛOY - TIMAPX[OY] Nike standing left, holding wreath in her right hand and palm frond over her left shoulder. SC 1601.1. Extremely rare with the denominational mark. Slightly porous, otherwise, very fine.


The Δ/X on the obverse stands for '4 Chalkoi' or 'Tetrachalkon', a value mark that first appears under Antiochos IV (175-164 BC), and only extremely rarely on coins of the usurper Timarchos.
