A beautifully toned 20 asses from Populonia
Lot 22
ETRURIA. Populonia. Circa 300-250 BC. 20 Asses (Silver, 23 mm, 8.52 g). Diademed facing head of Metus with protruding tongue; below, X:X (mark of value). Rev. Crude inscription (πŒπŒ–πŒπŒ‹πŒ–?). EC Group XII, 37.219 (this coin, O1/R1). Beautifully toned and very well centered, an excellent example. A few deliberately uncleaned deposits, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the Kleinkunst Collection, ex Triton I, 2-3 December 1997, 12.

This reverse die is thought to have carried an ethnic, but it was so heavily used and worn down that none of the surviving examples of this issue actually have a readable legend.
