Extremely rare
Lot 262
MYSIA. Kyzikos. Circa 550-450 BC. Hemihekte – 1/12 Stater (Electrum, 8 mm, 1.32 g). Head and neck of a lion to left emerging from tunny left. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Cf. Hurter & Liewald I, 34a (a hekte, but struck from the same obverse die). Von Fritze -. Extremely rare. Good very fine.

Hurter & Liewald list a hemihekte of this type as 34b, but that coin lacks the prolonged neck of the lion on our example. In fact, careful comparison with the image of 34a leads this cataloguer to believe that this is a case where the same obverse die was used for both hektai and hemihektai, thus explaining why the flan appears to be a bit short on the present coin
