A bold and unusually heavy dupondius of Claudius
Lot 334
Claudius, 41-54. Dupondius (Orichalcum, 29 mm, 16.56 g, 6 h), Rome, 41-42. TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG IMP P M TR P Bare head of Claudius to left. Rev. CERES AVGVSTA / S C Ceres, veiled and draped, seated left on ornamented throne, holding two grain ears in her right hand and long torch in her left. BMC 139. Cohen 2. RIC 94 note. A bold and heavy example with a very attractive portrait. About extremely fine.

RIC and BMC consider this issue a contemporary imitation, but the carefully produced heavy flans and the fine style speak against this. For an example struck from the same obverse die, see Triton XXII, 8 January 2019, 1005
