Unpublished and of great interest
Lot 1437
Maximianus, first reign, 286-305. Follis (Bronze, 27 mm, 9.01 g, 7 h), Treveri, 298-299. IMP MAXIMIANVS P AVG Laureate and cuirassed bust of Maximianus to left, holding scepter over his right shoulder and round shield in his left hand. Rev. GENIO POPV-LI ROMANI / A / ✱ / TR The Genius of the Roman people, nude but for chlamys, standing front, head to left, wearing kalathos and sacrificing out of patera over lighted altar with his right hand and holding cornucopiae in his left. RIC -, cf. 302 (no altar). Unpublished and of great interest. The reverse somewhat rough, otherwise, very fine.

From the Tetrarchy Collection, formed over the past twenty-five years and previously from the collections of P. Bastien and G. Gautier.

What makes this coin particularly interesting, aside from its rare bust type, is the fact the reverse has an altar to the left of Genius, which makes it unique in the contemporary coinage from the mint of Treveri.
