Lot 284
CARIA. Antioch ad Maeandrum. Circa 85-65/60 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 28 mm, 15.97 g, 12 h), Karneades, son of Karnas, magistrate. Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. ANTIOXEΩN KAPNEAΔHΣ KAPNA Eagle, with closed wings, standing left; before, cult statue of Artemis Ephesia with supports; all within maeander pattern. BMC -. Leschhorn, Lexicon of Greek Coin Inscriptions -. McClean -. SNG Copenhagen -. SNG Lockett -. SNG von Aulock -. Thonemann (forthcoming) prov. Group C, 16.a (O18/R28, this coin). Weber -. Winterthur -. Unique and unpublished save for the forthcoming Thonemann article. A beautifully struck and very well centered piece of great importance. Minor delamination on the reverse, otherwise, about extremely fine.

The magistrate Karneades, son of Karnas, was hitherto only known from a unique drachm in the ANS collection with a bull on the reverse (ANS 1983.51.544 = Thonemann (forthcoming) prov. Group C, 16.b). It is likely that Karneades was the brother of Tryphon, who also refers to a Karnas as his father (Leu Web Auction 7 (2019), 376 and Leu 2 (2018), 18 = Thonemann (forthcoming) prov. Group C, 13.a and 13.b)
