The 2 Reichsmark coins of the Weimar Republic were a favorite target for counterfeiters. Their task was made easier by the relatively low silver fineness of Weimar-era coinage - only 0.500 fine - which meant that counterfeits struck in debased or base metal were not always immediately apparent. At the same time, 2 Reichsmark still represented considerable purchasing power in the late 1920s, while coins of this denomination nevertheless circulated widely in everyday commerce.

The F (for Fälschung, counterfeit in German) was punched through the coin by the authorities after the forgery was discovered, clearly marking it as counterfeit and thereby invalidating it as currency.
