Joseph Hermann Hertz was Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the British Empire from 1913 to 1946 and one of the most influential representatives of Orthodox Judaism in the English-speaking world during the first half of the 20th century.

He is particularly remembered for his widely used English commentary on the Pentateuch, the Hertz Chumash, as well as for his vigorous defense of Jewish tradition, religious rights, and Zionism during a period marked by two world wars, rising antisemitism and the Shoah.
