Tetricus I, Romano-Gallic Emperor, 271-274. Antoninianus (Bronze, 15 mm, 1.66 g, 12 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Treveri, irregular mint, after 273. [...]RICVS [...] Radiate and cuirassed bust of Tetricus I to right; around, imitative legend. Rev. Hilaritas standing front, head to right, holding palm frond in her left hand and cornucopiae in her right. Cf. AGK (corr.) 4c, Cunetio 2648, Elmer 789 and RIC V.4 801 (for possible prototype). A very interesting piece of particularly wild and blundered style. Minor deposits, otherwise, good very fine.
While many imitations of the coinage of the Gallic Empire reproduce the types and legends with reasonable accuracy, the present piece is completely debased in style. It was evidently produced by an illiterate die engraver, who rendered the legends in entirely nonsensical lettering and freely altered the designs as he saw fit
