Extremely rare and of great historical importance. Well struck and clear, with a perfectly centered reverse of excellent style. Tiny flan crack, otherwise, good very fine.


The central sanctuary of Hercules Magusanus has been located in Empel, a suburb of 's-Hertogenbosch in the southern Netherlands, where excavations brought to light remnants of a monumental building, votive offerings and a dedicatory inscription to the demigod (for an additional note on the worship of Hercules by Postumus, see the following lot). Postumus issued a rare series of double sestertii in honor of Hercules Magusanus, but it is the Antoninianus that is among the most celebrated rarities in the usurper's coinage: Schulzki knew of only eleven examples, six of which are in museums. In any case, our coin appears to be the only example offered for sale in the 21st century, making it a showpiece for nothing but the most serious 'Gallic Empire' collection.
