SERBIA. Stefan Uros II Milutin (?), king, 1282-1321. Gros (Silver, 20 mm, 1.32 g, 6 h), anepigraphic. Stefan Uroš II standing facing on the left and St. Stefan, nimbate, standing facing on the right, holding book of Gospels in his left hand; both holding, between them with their right hands, patriarchal cross.
Rev. Christ, nimbate, seated facing on decorated throne and holding book of Gospels with both hands; in field to left and right, IC - XC. Jovanovic, SMC, -. Jovanovic, Srpski Srednjovekovni Novac, -. Apparently unpublished and unique. Extremely fine.
From a collection of coins from the medieval Balkans.
This coin is quite a mystery: it lacks the name and title the ruler and of the saint, as well as the IC - XC above Christ. Why such an anonymous and anepigraphic coin was produced is unknown, but it is certainly of great interest.
