Apparently unpublished, an interesting discovery
Lot 1660
Caracalla, 198-217. Antoninianus (Silver, 23 mm, 5.40 g, 1 h), Rome, 215. ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Caracalla to right, seen from behind. Rev. P M TR P XVIII COS IIII P P Jupiter seated left, holding Victory in his right hand and long scepter in his left. BMC -, cf. 118 (eagle at feet of Jupiter). Cohen -, cf. 277 (eagle at feet of Jupiter). RIC -, cf. 260b (eagle at feet of Jupiter). Apparently unpublished, an interesting discovery. About extremely fine.

In this intriguing, previously unpublished piece, Jupiter’s eagle - normally seated at his feet on this emission - is absent. That this is not merely an engraver’s error is confirmed by later issues on which the eagle is likewise omitted (denarius: RIC 287a; antoninianus: Roma E-Sale 68 [2020], 1099; Sonntag 45 [2025], 124).
