ZU LIECHTENSTEIN Draped bust of Franz Joseph II to left. Rev. 1906 SECHZIGSTER GEBURSTAG 1966 View of Castle Liechtenstein. Divo 146. 1848 out of 4210 examples. Virtually as struck.

The famous Spanish surrealist Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) also made his mark as a designer of medals. In addition to the widely encountered series and adaptations of his famous paintings into medallic form ('The Ten Commandments', 'Twelve Tribes of Israel', '1988 Winter Olympics commemorative medals' and others), the single medals conceived entirely by Dalí himself are far rarer. This piece, created and issued to mark the 60th birthday of Franz Joseph II, Prince of Liechtenstein, belongs to that scarcer category. The original plaster models for the medal’s design are on display at the Liechtenstein National Museum.
