A rare Scudo 1780 struck in 1799 during the Siege of Ancona

ITALY. Papal Coinage. Pius VI, 1775-1799. Scudo 1780 (Silver, 41 mm, 25.93 g, 12 h), Ancona. PIVS SIXTVS - PONT•M•A•VI Coat of arms surmounted by tiara, crossed keys and two cornucopiae. Rev. AVXILIVM - DE - SANCTO - 1780 Personification of the church, facing, sitting on clouds, A below right arm. Berman 3001. Davenport 1471. Muntoni 20. Rare and nicely toned. The usual areas of weakness and light scratches, otherwise, about very fine.


These coins were presumably struck in 1799 during the Siege of Ancona by Austrian, Turkish and Russian troops. They were minted with silver donated by the people of Ancona.
